BACKPACK BUDDIES is a city-wide ministry that provides food insecure children a bag of non-perishable food for weekends during the school year. First is partnered with Pulaski Elementary School where the church provides 30 children with food each week.
JAIL MINISTRY Since 1994, volunteers from First lead weekly Bible study at the Chatham County Jail.
GREEN TEAM is a group of First members who are interested in environmental issues. The team seeks to encourage stewardship of creation.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY First has a long history of involvement with the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. Our members chaired the board of directors and the family selection committee in the early history of the program. We were the first church to solely sponsor the construction of a Habitat house and we continue to hold occasional volunteer work days. Presently four First members serve on the Habitat board.
EMMAUS HOUSE serves breakfast on weekdays to more than 100 hungry people from the parish house of Christ Episcopal Church on Reynolds Square. Several members from First form the “A Team” and lend a hand on Tuesday mornings.
LEAVES OF THE TREE is an initiative that grew from a combined adult study with Butler Memorial Presbyterian Church on the subject of handgun violence. Using a denominational study paper, the two congregations met for a month and planned an annual community service where a tree is planted in a Nathanael Greene Park, names of those killed by gun violence in the city during the past year are read, and prayers are offered.
FAMILY PROMISE provides housing and employment support for families who are temporarily homeless. Usually about three families—up to 14 parents and children—are in the program at one time. They stay in our church building for one week at a time. Volunteers provide dinner, tutor or stay overnight in the church.
REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT Over the past forty years First has sponsored several families from Poland, Vietnam, Myanmar and most recently, Syria. While the family from Syria has relocated out-of-state, the church continues to have close ties with other refugees from Syria.
